Mangguana is a traditional wooden “phinisi” schooner. She was completely refurbished in 2007 with a modern teak wooden interior and the latest navigational and safety equipment. She is designed to comfortably lodge 8 people in four en-suite teakwood cabins. The trips combine leisure sailing and diving in a way that makes Mangguana an ideal choice for both divers and non-divers; there is something for everyone.

Dives are organized up to 5 times a day and are for all tastes and levels. Most dive sites are available for fantastic snorkeling and our guests also enjoy private excursions on white sand beaches, fishing and trekking escorted by park rangers to discover the wildlife on the islands. You will not be rushed either – Mangguana sets sails from Labuan Bajo in Flores, which eliminates the time-consuming and potentially boring traversals from Bali and saves more of your precious time for cruising around the islands at a relaxed pace. To arrive at Labuan Bajo, you will take a domestic flight from Bali.

There are four cabins (3 suites, and one standard double). Single travelers are catered for, provided that they are willing to share a twin cabin with another single guest. All cabins are air-conditioned and have an en-suite bathroom with a hot shower and a sink.

T he teak interiors lend the ship a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The main deck comprises a salon which doubles as the dining room, and a library offering a collection of books about the local fauna, flora and history. There is also a TV, DVD player, computer and overhead projector for immediate viewing of your photos. The bar offers beer, wine and other alcoholic drinks. Mineral water, soft drinks, coffee, and tea are available 24h. On the upper deck there are deck chairs and space for relaxing both in the sun as well as in the shade. Meals are of international standard with a focus on seafood.

Mangguana carries sets of dive gear for rent, and Nitrox is also available at an extra cost (unlimited nitrox dives over seven days). The use of dive tanks and weights, snorkeling gear, sea kayaks, and fishing gear is included.

Mangguana has an Indonesian crew of five and a multilingual cruise director, as well as an experienced dive master who knows the sites well.

Our main concern is safety on board. The vessel is fitted with all internationally required safety equipment and a well appointed first-aid box to treat all kinds of minor injuries. We have an agreement with an air-charter company in Bali using a sea-plane in case of emergency evacuation.

SMY: Mangguana specification

Mona Lisa is a traditional wooden “phinisi” schooner. Built in 1996, she was completely refurbished in 2006 with a modern teak wooden interior and the latest navigational and safety equipment. She is designed to comfortably lodge 12 people in six teakwood cabins. Her black-sailed silhouette is a well-known sight in the area.

T he trips combine leisure sailing and diving in a way that makes Mona Lisa an ideal choice for both divers and non-divers; there is something for everyone. Dives are organized up to 5 times a day and are for all tastes and levels. Most dive sites are available for fantastic snorkeling and our guests also enjoy private excursions on white sand beaches, fishing and trekking escorted by park rangers to discover the wildlife on the islands. You will not be rushed either – Mona Lisa sets sails from Labuan Bajo in Flores, which eliminates the time-consuming and potentially boring traversals from Bali and saves more of your precious time for cruising around the islands at a relaxed pace. To arrive at Labuan Bajo, you will take a domestic flight from Bali.

There are six cabins, some of which can be configured either as double or twin share. Single travelers are catered for, provided that they are willing to share a twin cabin with another single guest. All cabins are air-conditioned and have an en-suite bathroom with a hot shower and a sink.

The teak interiors lend the ship a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The main deck comprises a salon which doubles as the dining room, and a library offering a collection of books about the local fauna, flora and history. There is also a TV and a DVD player for immediate viewing of your photos. The bar offers beer, wine and other alcoholic drinks. Mineral water, soft drinks, coffee, and tea are available 24h. On the upper deck there are deck chairs and space for relaxing both in the sun as well as in the shade. Meals are of international standard with a focus on seafood.

M ona Lisa carries sets of dive gear for rent, and Nitrox is also available at an extra cost (unlimited nitrox dives over seven days). The use of dive tanks and weights, snorkeling gear, sea kayaks, and fishing gear is included.

Mona Lisa has an Indonesian crew of nine and a multilingual cruise director, as well as an experienced dive master who knows the sites well.

Our main concern is safety on board. The vessel is fitted with all internationally required safety equipment and a well appointed first-aid box to treat all kinds of minor injuries. We have an agreement with an air-charter company in Bali using a sea-plane in case of emergency evacuation.

Bayview Garden Hotel
This small boutique-hotel, owned and managed by a dutch- indonesian family, brings the best of two cultures together: Western comfort and hygiene in an abundant tropical ambiance. We speak Dutch, English, German and Indonesian. It’s the only hotel in the surroundings where you get the feeling of living in a botanical garden, with more than 400 species of fruit-trees, flowers, herbal plants, vegetables, cacti and so on, ingeniously terraced to follow the steep slope.

More a guest house than hotel, the rooms are immaculate and well kept. Its nothing like an international hotel, but we really enjoyed the open air living room with a stunning ocean view. The bedroom is air-conditioned and a nice retreat.

Upon check in, a thermos of hot water and a variety of coffees are delivered in a basket with some local peanuts.

Adrien, the owner, is very kind and helpful. He helps make arrangement for dinner, which can be delivered from any of Labuan Bajo’s few restaurants. Adrien delivered a couple of bottles of ice cold Bintang to our room, which we drank will taking in the incredible view. We just sat on the veranda for two hours watching the happenings in the port, and enjoying the slow sun set behind Komodo National Park. Fantastic!!!

Breakfast is ordered the day before on a white board near the entrance and is delivered to the guest room exactly when requested. The continental breakfast is simple and delicious. The hotel also offers an Indonesia breakfast as well.

The main strip of Labuan Bajo is a 10 minute walk down a hill. Getting back up the hill can be sweaty, so its best to take a bemo for about 1-2,000 rp, which stops right at the hotel entrance.

We would definitely stay at The Bayview Gardens Hotel and Viewpoint again, and highly recommend it for the gracious hospitality of the owner and his family, the welcoming spirit we received, and the incredible view of Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park.

At 60 meters above sea-level the view from every room over the old fishermen-village, the harbor, the bay and the islands in the Komodo-archipelago is undisturbed and breath-taking. And so are the red sunsets in the rainy season.

Some of the rooms have an indoor open living-room next to the small sleeping-room and the bathroom; others have a private terrace outside the more spacey sleeping-room and bathroom. All have hot and cold water, AC, a lot of fans and a safe, spring beds and good sound-isolation. Privacy is the key-word. An extensive western breakfast is included in the price.

The eco-character is fully optimized by saving and cleaning the rain- and wastewater, recycling all that’s edible by our life stock and making compost. On request we serve an extensive lunch and dinner (set menu) or, for more than four people, an indonesian buffet, rijsttafel, which will please your throat. Get surprised!

The room-rates
Standard : US$ 50/Night/Single or Double including breakfast and taxes
Deluxe : US$ 70/Night/Single or Double including breakfast and taxes

Labuan Bajo
Labuan Bajo is the most important city in the Western part of the island and is the capital of the West Flores District (Manggarai Barat). It is the starting point for excursions to the Komodo National Park, famous for its giant lizards, to some of the world’s best dive sites, to a fascinating island world and unspoiled nature. The laid back fishing village of former times is developing slowly but surely, adding the infrastructure necessary for tourism. The atmosphere reminds Indonesia- lovers of Bali some twenty years ago.

These days Labuan Bajo is estimated to hold a population of around 10.000 people. Since it has become the capital of the District of West Flores (Manggarai Barat) Labuan Bajo has become a busy and constantly growing place. With its various tourism attractions it has grown into the centre of tourism for the entire island.

Service has improved compared with former times. An ATM serves credit card users, the BNI bank is changing money. The internet connection in general has improved and wireless connections are available in a couple of places.

The dive services are dominant in the harbour area of Labuan Bajo, surrounded by local and western oriented restaurants serving delicious fresh seafood. The town map will help you to find your way around.

The supermarkets serve more than basic needs, so the Western traveler doesn’t have to miss a thing.

Villa Seirama Alam is situated above the bay of Labuan Bajo. The harbour, restaurants and shops are within walking distance (appr. 15 min). Also allow 15 min for the transfer to and from Komodo Airport.

Besides the local bemo (minibus), motorbike taxis have become quite common in Labuan Bajo. For Rp. 3.000 they take you from A to B. Transport to the airport might be more
