From Labuan Bajo · one afternoon

Komodo sunset cruise: no 05:00 pickup, no cabin

About three hours from Labuan Bajo harbour, timed so you watch the sun drop behind the islands from the deck. The easiest way onto Komodo water when you have one free afternoon.

Book a same-week slot

The short version

Routes either stay near town or head toward Kalong Island, where flying foxes leave the mangroves at dusk. Book it for the evening you land, or the last night before you fly.

  • Boarding is roughly two hours before sunset, at the harbour in Labuan Bajo
  • There is no single published sunset-cruise price: it depends on the boat and the headcount
  • The Kalong fly-out is wildlife, not a show — numbers and timing vary by season
  • Park fees apply only if your route enters the park; your quote should say which

Plate I

How the three hours run

Komodo Luxury describes the format on its boat-party page as a three-hour sunset cruise, and that matches how most evenings go. Times are relative to sunset, because sunset moves.

  1. Sunset −2h

    Boarding at the harbour

Meet the crew at the pier in Labuan Bajo. The desk sends the exact meeting point with your confirmation.

  2. Sunset −1h30

    A swim or snorkel stop

At a nearby island while the sun is still high, if the route and sea allow.

Weather call on the day, especially December to March.

  3. Sunset −30m

    Golden hour

The captain holds position at a chosen spot, facing west.

  4. Sunset

    The drop behind the islands

Cloud over Flores can bring the best colour a little earlier than the clock says.

  5. After dark

The sail back, or the anchorage

A stand-alone sail returns shortly after dark. An overnight boat anchors instead.

Day-return sails keep to routes the boat can legally complete after dark.

Kalong Island is the headline stop, and the fly-out is the part nobody can promise.

Four ways to buy a sunset

Komodo Luxury does not publish one fixed sunset-cruise price as of September 2026. What you pay depends on the boat, the guest count, and whether the sunset is a stand-alone sail or part of an overnight trip.

Four ways to buy a sunset
Option Price basis Format and duration Best for
Private sunset charter Quoted per boat; depends on vessel and headcount Speedboat or phinisi, about 3 hours, late afternoon Couples, proposals, an arrival or departure evening
Shared sunset seat On request, per person Joins a scheduled evening departure when one runs Solo travellers, small budgets
Sunset inside a 2D1N charter Per vessel, quoted on request Overnight; the boat can anchor near a sunset spot Groups who want sunset and sunrise on board
Sunset on the 3D2N open trip Per person, quoted for your date, vessel and cabin Shared cabin; fixed Padar–Pink Beach–Komodo–Manta route Travellers with three days

One naming trap: Komodo Luxury lists a speedboat called Sunset Speedboat. Its published itinerary is a daytime trip back in the afternoon, for up to 9 guests, quoted per day for your guest count as of September 2026. An evening-timed charter on any boat is quoted separately.

What can be set up on deck

Private boats can be arranged for the evening. Each item is arranged and priced per request, so ask when you send your dates.

Drinks

Speedboat packages list mineral water and soft drinks as included and alcohol as excluded, so wine or cocktails are extra.

Alcohol is an add-on

Canapés or a light dinner

A longer evening with dinner on board can be arranged on a private charter.

Prepared by the crew

Sunset in Labuan Bajo, month by month

Labuan Bajo runs on WITA (UTC+8). These are astronomical approximations for mid-month, not a timetable — your boarding time comes from the desk. Cloud over Flores can bring the best colour a little earlier.

Sunset in Labuan Bajo, month by month
Month Approx. sunset (WITA) Suggested boarding
January 18:25 16:15
February 18:25 16:15
March 18:15 16:00
April 18:00 15:45
May 17:50 15:45
June 17:50 15:45
July 17:55 15:45
August 18:00 15:45
September 17:55 15:45
October 17:55 15:45
November 18:00 15:45
December 18:15 16:00

Cruises run all year, but most departures cluster in the April–November dry season, when seas tend to be calmer. From December to March, expect a weather call on the day.

Two reported 2026 rules that move the timing

Both affect an evening sail specifically. Confirm the current version with the desk before paying.

  1. Harbour movement after dark. The Labuan Bajo harbourmaster (KSOP) reportedly restricted tourist-boat movement after dark in high-risk park zones from 10 January 2026.
  2. So day-return sails keep to routes the boat can legally complete, and a Kalong fly-out works best on an overnight boat already at anchor before nightfall.
  3. Park entry sessions. A cap of about 1,000 park visitors a day was reportedly trialled January–March 2026 and enforced from 1 April 2026, in time slots including an afternoon session of roughly 15:00–18:00.
  4. Park-bound routes need passport details on the operator's manifest in advance, so walk-in entry is not reliable.

Plate V

Arrival evening or the night before you fly

Those are the two afternoons most travellers waste, and only one of them is safe to book.

The evening you land

  • Works if your Denpasar flight lands by early afternoon
  • Dry-season boarding is around 15:45, so allow for the airport, check-in and the drive
  • Send your flight time and the desk can set a boarding slot with a buffer
  • If the margin is too tight the desk will suggest the next evening

The night before you fly out

  • Book your last night, not your departure afternoon
  • Boats return after dark, which leaves no margin for a same-evening flight
  • Arriving the day before a 3D2N departure is the safest plan anyway, and it frees that evening
  • A stand-alone sail is about three hours, so it fits an evening without a cabin

Plate VI

How booking an evening sail works

Short-notice slots exist, but they depend on availability and on the weather.

  1. Message the desk

Your date, number of guests and hotel, on WhatsApp.

  2. Choose shared or private

A seat on an evening departure or the whole boat, plus any extras.

  3. Get a boat and a quote

The team proposes a vessel, route and boarding time that fit current harbour and park rules.

  4. Confirm with a deposit

The published private-trip terms ask for 50% up front, with the balance due 14 days before the trip, or in full inside 14 days. Confirm the terms for your boat.

  5. Send passport details

For the manifest, then meet the crew at the harbour at your boarding time.
