How much do share cabins cost on the same boats?

Komodo Luxury sells shared cabins only on the 3D2N open trip. They are quoted per person for the vessel, cabin and departure you choose, and you’ll sail with roughly 8–22 other guests. The weekday open trip is quoted on request for the same details.

Malca Voyages is a useful benchmark because it sells both formats. Its shared cabins are quoted per person, by cabin type, for the departure you pick:

Where is the break-even point by group size?

To find your own break-even point, ask the desk for the whole-boat quote on each vessel you like and the shared-cabin rate for the same departure, then divide the charter total by the number of guests sleeping aboard. Quotes in IDR also move with the exchange rate.

Three patterns stand out.

Couples pay a steep premium. With only two guests aboard, a whole-boat charter costs many times the entry-level cabin rate, and the gap is widest on the largest vessels.

At six guests the gap narrows, but it’s still there. Six friends sharing cabins on an open trip still pay less per head than the same six chartering a phinisi. Ask for both quotes on your dates to see what privacy adds.

From about eight guests, private charters move towards the shared range. Once eight to twelve guests split one whole-boat quote, the share per head approaches what those guests would each pay for a cabin on a shared departure of the same vessel. The Komodo National Park fee is paid once per trip and is not included in the cruise price. You pay it on both shared and private trips, so it doesn’t move the break-even point.

What does the extra money actually buy?

Price per person is only part of the decision. A private charter changes how the trip runs:

• Dates. Shared 3D2N trips typically depart Monday–Wednesday and Friday–Sunday. A charter runs on your dates, as long as the vessel is free.
• Route and pace. The open trip follows a fixed loop: Padar Island, Pink Beach, Komodo Island and Manta Point. A private group can ask for Rinca (Loh Buaya) instead of Loh Liang, longer at Taka Makassar, or sunset at Kalong Island, as long as park rules allow.
• Company. You won’t share the deck with 8–22 strangers. For families with small children or older parents, that alone is often the deciding factor.
• One schedule. Park entry reportedly runs in time slots (roughly 05:00–08:00, 08:00–11:00 and 15:00–18:00) under a cap of about 1,000 visitors per day, enforced from 1 April 2026. A private group plans early starts around its own needs rather than a full boat’s.

When is a private Komodo cruise not worth it?

Book a shared cabin instead of a charter if any of these fit your trip:

1. You’re one or two people on a budget. The weekday open trip, quoted per person on request, is the cheapest way to see the main sights. Couples who want privacy at night can ask for Malca’s Master Ocean View cabin on a shared departure instead of chartering the whole boat.
2. Your group is four or fewer and price matters. Four guests splitting a whole-boat charter still pay far more each than they would for shared cabins on the same route.
3. You want company. Many solo travellers choose open trips to meet other people.
4. The standard route is all you want. If Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo and Manta Point cover your wish list, most of the charter premium pays for privacy alone.
5. Your dates already match a scheduled departure. Choosing your own dates is one of a charter’s biggest advantages. If the regular Monday or Friday departure already suits you, that advantage disappears.

How should your group decide?

Run this quick test before contacting the reservations team:

Groups of six or seven fall in the middle. For them, the question is usually whether the extra cost per head, once both quotes are in, is worth having no strangers on board.
